~ For Teachers in Texas

Austin College Summer Latin Institute 2005 for Texas High School Teachers

How would you like to spend a week immersed in Latin—all-expenses-paid—learning about literature, culture, and the latest technology?

July 17-22, 2005, Austin College will present a unique immersion experience for Texas high school foreign language teachers. The Austin College Foreign Language Institute offers teachers an opportunity to refresh their language skills and develop new cultural and technology resources for their students. Teachers in each language—French, German, Latin, Spanish—will participate in the one-week, residential Institute with native speakers and faculty from Austin College’s Department of Classical and Modern Languages. In Latin—due to the fact that nearly all our native speakers are otherwise occupied—we will have as our “near native speaker” Laura Veal, Latin teacher at Highland Park H.S. and veteran of many summer programs with Fr. Reginald Foster in Rome.

All teachers who complete the Institute will receive 40 Continuing Professional Education Units.

If you would like to see what we have done in other institutes, our schedules for the 2002 and 2003 programs can be found at:

http://erasmus.austincollege.edu/Institute2002/index-institute.htm and http://erasmus.austincollege.edu/Institute2003/index.htm

What does the program cost? NOTHING.
The Institute is funded by a generous grant from the Sid W. Richardson Foundation to promote foreign language teaching in Texas. Everything is included except travel to and from Sherman.

The deadline for applying to the Institute is April 1, 2005 (no kidding!).
The Institute is open to all Texas high school foreign language teachers. We have had many requests from middle school teachers about previous Institutes and are glad to announce that we can consider middle school teachers for this year’s program. Please contact me for more information if you are a middle school teacher.

You may download a copy of the application and brochure at http://cml.austincollege.edu/Institute2005/

What will we do in the workshop?
Each day’s schedule includes culture and literature workshops during the day and additional cultural activities in the evening. Activities are conducted in small groups according to language. We will also have sessions about incorporating Internet materials into the Latin classroom. Most meals will be taken together, but each language group will have one night to prepare traditional food from one or more of the countries where the language is spoken. Participants speak their target language at all times. The atmosphere is informal and highly collegial.

Where will we live?
Participants will lodge in the new $3,000,000 Jordan Family Language House. All workshops and events will take place in the classrooms and common rooms located in the House. This unique complex houses foreign language students at Austin College during the regular school year and was designed with language and culture immersion as its primary purpose. It is divided into four sections, one for each language, consisting of bedroom suites and a commons area. There is a kitchen where participants can create the culinary specialties of their countries. Two high-tech classrooms, a computer development room, and a residential computing facility support the educational activities of the House. State-of-the-art technology in the classrooms and total language immersion in the House offer an exceptional experience for participants and faculty.

How do I find out more?
Consult our website at http://cml.austincollege.edu/Institute2005/
You may also contact this year’s Director, Truett Cates (tcates@austincollege.edu or 903 813-2376).

~ CFP (sort of ): Guid to the Gods and Goddesses

Interesting request via the Canadian Classical Bulletin:

My name is Shelley Rabinovitch, and I have taken on the task for the American publisher ABC-CLIO of revising their reference text "A Guide to the Gods" (as "Guide to the Gods and Goddesses") and am seeking contributors. Revised texts are due in early 2006, and ideally contributors will work at their own pace, sending me updates as they get through the easy part <just tweaking some of the old entries> and into the meaty work <writing or dramatically revising entries>.

We are both updating the existing entries, and where applicable, adding new entries and/or entire sections. Ideally I am seeking graduate students and/or faculty who can either edit the existing entries and/or add new entries where they see holes in the listings. Contributors can choose to work on just a few entries from one culture/area, or grab an entire culture/area if they so choose.

Many of the original sources cited in the first edition are badly out of date due to wonderful new research in many areas. I am looking for scholars who can work in English or other languages, who can translate from foreign-language texts (including Greek and Latin), etc.

There is some compensation available (both in copies of the completed book, and/or in cash), and it is a great chance for a new grad to get some academic publishing credit onto their c.v.'s. There are literally dozens of cultures and pantheons needing work. I have no specialists in Classical (Greek, Latin, Etruscan, etc. etc.), Asian religions (Chinese minority, Japanese, Tibet, etc. etc.), Polynesia/Micronesia/Melanesia, Southern and Eastern African tribal, Australasian, Central and/or South American, JUST to name a few.

I would appreciate the widest distribution of this request so that I can get a good start on revising and expanding the collection. I am looking for ethnographers and anthropologists, religionists, classicists, folklorists, etc. etc.

Please have interested parties contact me at:
Shelley Rabinovitch, PhD
tsivia@uottawa.ca
Dept. of Classics and Religious Studies
University of Ottawa
Ottawa, Ontario
K1N 6N5
Canada

Specializations within the general area of classics such as ancient history, ancient philosophy, and classical archaeology are eligible. Applicants must be less than 28 years of age on January 1st of the year of application. The main criteria are academic achievement, professional promise, and an appropriate undergraduate preparation.

Application procedure. The following items should be sent, to arrive by MARCH 31st, to Professor James Murray, CAC Awards Committee Chair, Department of Classics & Ancient History, University of New Brunswick, Box 4400, Fredericton, NB E3B 5A3:

Selection and award procedure. The Committee meets during the Association's annual general meeting in May. Applicants will be informed of the results as soon as possible following the AGM. The award will be paid in September subject to confirmation that the winner has registered in an appropriate graduate program. (The committee may choose to reduce the amount of the award or make an honorary award if the total amount of this and other awards offered to the winner for the first twelve months of graduate study - including scholarships, fee remissions, teaching and research assistantships and the like - exceeds $18,000.
~ Study Drama @ Epidavros

Intensive Course on the Study and Performance of Ancient Greek Drama, 2005

The fouth Summer School, organised under the auspices of the European Network of Research and Documentation of Performances of Greek Drama, will be held at Epidauros from the 3rd to the 17th July 2005. Applications are invited from suitably qualified graduate students to attend this unique course, which centres academic and theatrical activities around the performances taking place in the ancient theatre of Epidauros at the time. Participants also attend lectures by well-known European scholars, rehearsals, and meetings with artists.

The British members of the European Network are Oxford University and The Open University. In the first years of this course applications were submitted only from these two institutions, but applications are now invited from all British universities. Since it is likely that at most five places on the Intensive Course will be allocated to applicants from Britain, there are some criteria for selection which will be seriously taken into account:

1. Applicants should be engaged on a postgraduate degree.
2. They should have a special interest in ancient Greek drama and its performance.
3. They should explain why they think that this course will be of particular interest to them.
4. They should ask their supervisor to send an academic reference under separate cover.

The fee for the course is 500 euros, which will cover accommodation, meals, ticket for performances, and archaeological visits. Travel to and from Epidauros has to be at the expense of the student. Please would applicants also indicate how likely it is that they will be able to raise sufficient funding to attend the course.

Please address
applications and any enquiries about the course to:

Professor Oliver Taplin
Archive of Performances of Greek and Roman Drama
The Old Boys' Grammar School
George Street
Oxford OX1 2RL

Applications must be received by Monday 24th January 2005 at the latest.

~ UCincinnati Papyrological Summer Institute

Papyrological Summer Institute
Department of Classics
University of Cincinnati
July 5-August 5, 2005

In 2005, the Department of Classics at the University of Cincinnati will sponsor a papyrological summer institute for advanced graduate students and junior faculty in Classics, Ancient History, Egyptology, Religious Studies, Classical or Near Eastern Archaeology and related disciplines. The theme of the summer institute, which will meet for five weeks, from July 5 through August 5, is Books and Religions in a broad sense. The primary material will consist of Greek and some Coptic literary and documentary papyri from Graeco-Roman Egypt. The objective of the seminar is to teach participants how to read and use papyri and to provide them with the kind of practical experience that will enable them to make productive use of papyrus texts in their own research and even to become active scholars in the field. Hands-on experience with original and unpublished materials will be combined with lectures and individual projects.
The papyrological summer institute at Cincinnati is the third in a series of summer institutes taking place under the aegis of the American Society of Papyrologists; the fourth summer institute, in 2006, will be hosted by Columbia University, New York.
Admission to the seminar is by application. Enrollment is limited to ten participants. Applications are welcome from qualified individuals without regard to institutional affiliation. No prior experience in papyrology is expected, but a high degree of competence in ancient Greek is essential. A full-time commitment to the activities of the summer institute is required of all participants, who are expected to be in residence in Cincinnati for its duration. The summer institute is the equivalent of three graduate courses, and instruction will be on five days a week.
The principal instructors will be Prof. Jean-Luc Fournet (École Pratique, Paris) and Prof. Peter van Minnen (University of Cincinnati); additional support will come from Prof. W. Clarysse (University of Leuven) and Prof. William A. Johnson (University of Cincinnati) and other, occasional lecturers. The workshops and lectures will take place in the Blegen Library, which houses the Burnam Classics Library with ready access to over 200,000 volumes. Participants will need this library for their individual projects.
Participation in the seminar is free of charge and not for credit. Participants will neither be graded nor issued a transcript.
~ Dig Pompeii

The ‘Pompeii Archaeological Research Project: Porta Stabia’ (PARP:PS) will begin a new archaeological excavation, structural assessment, and geo-physical survey of the shops, workshops, inns, and houses at VIII.7.1-15, Pompeii. This neighbourhood was selected for intensive investigation because of its unique potential to reveal the developing relationship between public and private space in the Roman city: each of the private buildings were connected to the so-called ‘entertainment district’ – an area comprising two theatres, a large public colonnaded courtyard, three temples, and a forum. The buildings for excavation line one of the major thoroughfares of Pompeii, just inside one of the city gates (the Porta Stabia); here was the social and cultural hub of Pompeii. Even so, no stratigraphic excavations have ever taken place since the first clearance of volcanic debris just over a century ago. PARP:PS offers the rare opportunity to begin new and exciting research into a forgotten corner of Pompeii (not even the tourists enter here), where modern archaeological investigation and penetrating inquiry can shed light on this fascinating pocket of urban life.

PARP:PS forms a close collaboration between the University of Sydney (Steven Ellis) and Stanford University (Dr Gary Devore). The project directors have combined almost 20 years of experience excavating Pompeii.

PARP:PS will operate a field school in 2005 (2 July - 6 August). The field school will include students from around the world, each of whom will bring their own cultural experiences, approaches, and questions. We believe in the benefits of working and thinking alongside other international students. Our ratio of students to staff members is particularly strong: we will accept 20 students to work in close consultation with experienced archaeologists, historians and scholars. The structure of the field school allows for students with all levels of experience.

Those interested in the project and its field school are encouraged to visit:

Hellenism/Modernism
Special Issue: Agora
http://www.humanities.ualberta.ca/agora

::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Deadline: January 15, 2005

::::::::::::::::::::::::::

The editors of Agora seek papers that examine the relationship between Modernism and Hellenism. The topic of Hellenism and the Arts in the Twentieth Century has been a rising area of scholarly interest, ranging from broad studies such as Roessel's recent In *Byron's Shadow* and Keeley's *Inventing Paradise* to author-specific works like Gregory's *H.D. and Hellenism* or Schork's *Greek and Hellenic Culture in Joyce*. Authors as diverse as Hemingway and H.D. or Conrad and Cohen have all found significant inspiration through an engagement with their Philhellenic interests. Moreover, given the prominence of Said's *Orientalism* over the past twenty-five years, analysis of Hellenism as a discourse is particularly welcomed. We encourage works with a postcolonial or colonial focus and aim for this issue to address a prominent gap in scholarship——studies of Modernism have largely endorsed the importance of postcolonial readings, yet Hellenism's role as a defining discourse primarily conducted by foreign powers remains understudied.

Submissions may address any aspect of Hellenism or Philhellenism in conjunction with Modernist arts and letters. Papers that take advantage of the electronic medium are encouraged, though authors are responsible for arranging rights for materials for which they do not hold copyright. Authors might consider, but are not limited to:

• popular culture materials related to or
 representing Greece
• Modernist circles based in Greece or centred
 around Greek authors
• Hellenism as an academic discourse with
 political and artistic implications
• tourism and cultural commodities
• travel literature
• emigrant/immigrant literature
• the Greek diaspora
• Hellenic locales and centres outside of
 Greece

Please direct enquiries and submissions to the editors of this special issue, Beatrice Skordili <bskordil@otenet.gr> and James Gifford <gifford@ualberta.ca>, or <agora@mail.arts.ualberta.ca>.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Agora is comprised of an international board of Associate Editors. The journal is indexed in the MLA Bibliography and the Canadian Literary Periodical Index; it is also archived in the National Library of Canada. Submissions are welcomed from (post)graduate students and new scholars in any disciplinary field.

Manuscripts, with a 200-250 word abstract, can be submitted in either hard-copy or electronic format, although accepted papers must be submitted electronically in accordance with current MLA guidelines. The author's name should not appear on the manuscript, but on a separate cover page, or for e-mail submissions, in the body of the e-mail stating name, mailing address, e-mail address and the title of the paper. Electronic submissions may be sent to Agora on a 3.5 diskette, or via e-mail <agora@mail.arts.ualberta.ca> with the subject heading "Submission." Documents should be formatted in MS Word, HTML, or Rich Text Format. Print submissions may be sent in duplicate to:

New Journal: Studies in Greek Early Iron Age Archaeology

We are proposing to launch a new academic journal entitled "Studies in Greek Early Iron Age Archaeology" and would like to hear from people interested in contributing in the following ways:

* as co-editors (TOP PRIORITY!)
* as members of the editorial advisory board/peer reviewers
* as article authors

The Greek Early Iron Age (ca. 1100-700 BCE), usually referred to as the "Dark Age" of Greece, is a crucial, though relatively neglected period of Greek history. The aim of the journal is to provide a forum in which to discuss issues related to the archaeology of this period, including theoretical and methodological perspectives, interpretation of material culture and so forth.

All the best,
Ioannis Georganas

LEARN LATIN THIS SUMMER AT THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA!

- 2 years of college-level Latin in just 9 weeks
- No previous knowledge of Latin necessary

- 12 UVa credit hours or no-credit option

- Housing available in the Monroe Language House

The Department of Classics at the University of Virginia will again offer
Latin as one of the University's eight Summer Language Institutes. The Latin
Institute will run from June 14 to August 13; it is a highly intensive
program that will prepare diligent students to read at an intermediate to
advanced college level after successful completion of the nine-week program.
No previous knowledge of Latin is required.

The Institute begins with the fundamentals of Latin grammar, including
elementary readings and composition. Thereafter students read extensively
from prose and verse authors at the intermediate level, in addition to
completing more advanced exercises in prose composition and metrics. A
dedicated faculty of five instructors provides six hours of formal
instruction each day and supplementary tutoring sessions each evening.

Many participants in previous sessions of the Latin Institute have benefited
greatly from this experience. In the past we have hosted undergraduates from
numerous institutions in the U.S. and abroad who have applied credit earned
at the Institute toward degrees in Classics and other related disciplines.
Many graduate students from various fields, including History, Religious
Studies, Art History, Philosophy, Medieval Studies, Romance Languages, and
English, have completed our intensive program and continue to use Latin to
further their educational and research objectives. The following is a
sampling of comments made by students from past Latin Institutes:

"The Latin Institute has instructors with creative and energetic approaches
to language study."

"The structure was most effective...the whole process was very rewarding."

"I learned a tremendous amount of Latin in a very short period of time."

"The student has been given a thorough base from which to continue study."

"Chalk me up as another Summer Institute success story. I just passed the
English Department's PhD Latin exam....I want to thank you all for making
the Institute

such a valuable experience."

The deadline for applications is April 15, 2004. Students can earn 12 credit
hours through UVa, or they may choose a non-credit option, which reduces the
tuition for graduate students and non-Virginia residents. For more
information please contact Brian C. Marinas, Director of the Summer Latin
Institute, bcm6e@virginia.edu; Blair Brown, Office of the Summer Language
Institute, uvasli@virginia.edu; or visit www.virginia.edu/summer/SLI/.

The American Academy in Rome: Summer Program in Archaeology

SUMMER PROGRAM IN ARCHAEOLOGY
7 June – 23 July 2004

The Summer Program in Archaeology was conceived in 1991 to give graduate students in all areas of Classical studies an overview of current developments in archaeological method and theory, focusing on ancient Italy and the ancient Mediterranean world.

The seven-week course teaches selected participants the objectives and methods of archaeology through instruction and hands-on experience in active archaeological research.

The program is divided into two parts: three weeks in residence at the American Academy for lectures and the opportunity to study the monuments and sources offered by Rome itself, and four weeks on-site at an archaeological excavation.

ELIGIBILITY
The program is open to graduate students in archaeology, Classics, and art history, though qualified advanced undergraduate students may also be considered.

COSTS AND LOGISTICS
A fee of $2,500, which covers tuition, partial room and board, and travel within Italy, must be paid to the Academy's office in New York by 15 May 2004. This amount does not cover the cost of transportation to and from Italy. Participants should be prepared to pay for additional meals, any travel not directly related to the program and other personal expenses such as laundry.

Participants will be accommodated in the newly renovated building at Via Masina 5b adjoining the main Academy building, with multi-room apartments. Participants will be housed in double rooms with shared baths. Applicants should note that there is no air conditioning either at the Academy or in most public buildings in Rome. Lunch and dinner are provided at the Academy Monday through Saturday. Each participant will receive a bill itemizing charges for phone calls and other incidental expenses.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Students are encouraged to obtain support from their university or department. Additional financial assistance from the Academy is available to qualified participants in the program. If such assistance is requested, please submit copies of any financial award letters for the most recent academic year. In determining scholarship amounts, preference will be given to those students enrolled at colleges and universities that are Institutional Members of the American Academy in Rome.

HOW TO APPLY
A complete application consists of a cover letter explaining why the program is of interest, a curriculum vitae and two sealed letters of recommendation.
APPLICATION DEADLINE
15 March 2004
